Vintage French Crystal and Gilt Trinket Tray

A small oval of cut crystal set in a gilt frame, in the confident French style that never understood the case for plain.

The crystal is cut in deep, blocky facets that throw light around generously, and there's a starburst cut into the base. The rim is a band of gilt metal stamped with a fine leaf pattern. One end is finished with a scallop shell, and the whole thing stands on four small scrolled feet, a bit like it's on tiptoe.

Set it on a dressing table for rings and earrings, by the bed for whatever ends up in your pockets at night, or on a desk for paper clips. Those paper clips will feel better about themselves than they have any right to.

The gilt shows a soft, warm wear consistent with age, which takes the edge off its shine in the nicest way.
