These are a magnificent pair (sold separately) of Empire-style plant stands or pedestals, also known as sellettes or torchères, likely dating from the late 19th century. These stands exemplify the Empire Revival style with their distinctive neoclassical ornamentation. The construction features figured walnut or elm wood, showcasing beautiful natural grain patterns. The hexagonal tops are edged with bronze beaded trim. Each stand is adorned with elaborate ormolu, or gilt bronze mounts, including winged sphinx or griffin figures forming the corner supports, classical winged creatures, possibly griffins or chimeras, with detailed feather work at the apron, acanthus leaf and foliate decorative elements throughout, paw feet at the base with additional brass mounts, and shaped lower shelves with corresponding brass ornamental details. The proportions are elegant and tall, making them ideal for displaying plants, sculptures, or decorative objects. The craftsmanship displays high-quality joinery and metalwork characteristic of fine Continental furniture from this period.
These stands are in excellent condition with only minor age-appropriate wear consistent with pieces over 100 years old. The wood retains a warm, attractive patina. The ormolu mounts show some natural darkening and slight wear to the gilding, which is expected and adds authenticity.
