Antique J.E. Caldwell Sterling Silver Hand-Painted Portrait Box
Antique J.E. Caldwell Sterling Silver Hand-Painted Portrait Box
An exceptional antique sterling silver portrait box by J.E. Caldwell & Co. of Philadelphia, a renowned American jewelry and silver house founded by James Emmott Caldwell in 1839.
This substantial oval box features beautifully worked sterling silver with elaborate scrolling foliate decoration surrounding a central hand-painted portrait miniature of an elegant woman. Delicately rendered beneath glass, the portrait is framed in sterling and gives the piece the feeling of both a precious object and a miniature work of art.
The box is marked J.E. Caldwell & Co. and Sterling, identifying it with the celebrated Philadelphia firm known for its fine jewelry, silver and luxury objets d’art.
A particularly unusual form, this is the first sterling silver portrait box of its kind we have offered at Swan Hill Home. Beautiful displayed on a vanity, dressing table, or collected alongside antique portrait miniatures and silver boxes.
In great antique condition, with light wear consistent with age and use.
