Antique French Metallic Brocade Ribbon Wall Hanging with Gilt Convex Frame
A French wall hanging made from a length of metallic brocade ribbon, folded into a point and finished with a small gilt metal frame. The ribbon is woven with silvery scrolls and oval cartouches of roses in soft rose, peach, and garnet, edged with a fine green braid. At the top, a cast gilt bow of leaves and blossoms does the hanging. At the bottom, a round gilt frame with domed convex glass waits for a portrait, a pressed flower, a lock of hair, or nothing at all, which is also a look.
The metallic threads have softened to a pewter-toned shimmer, and the gilt has the warm, slightly uneven glow of metal that has been handled. It is a small thing that does a lot of work on a wall, a bedpost, or the corner of a mirror.
