Antique French Rococo Revival Chair

This is an exquisite antique French Rococo Revival side chair dating from the late 19th century, circa 1870-1900. The chair exemplifies the Rococo Revival aesthetic with its ornate carved details, curvaceous lines, and elaborate gilt ornamentation. The frame has been beautifully painted in a striking turquoise or robin’s egg blue with contrasting gold leaf or gilt accents highlighting the intricate carved details, beaded borders, and decorative moldings. The rectangular back frame features an ornate gilt cartouche crest adorned with flowing rocaille work, floral bouquets, ribbons, and scrolling acanthus leaves - all characteristic of the Rococo style. Both the oval seat and shield-shaped back panel retain their original hand-caned seats in excellent condition, showing minimal sagging or damage, which is remarkable for caning of this age. The seat apron is decorated with gilt rosettes and beading, while the cabriole legs, typical of Rococo design, are accented with gilt details and terminate in delicate gilt sabots.

The chair shows age-appropriate wear with some distressing to the painted finish, particularly visible on the back frame, which adds to its authentic antique character and charm. The combination of the vibrant blue paint with gold accents and pristine caning makes this an exceptionally decorative piece.
