English School, 19th Century — River Landscape with Brick Bridge and Cattle

A small river landscape with a great deal going on for its size. Cattle have come down to drink; a brick bridge with timber sluice gates spans the water; a barge works upriver under a tanned sail, and a church tower sits on the far horizon doing what church towers do. The sky takes up more than half the panel, worked in thick restless strokes that suggest the weather has other plans for the afternoon.

The handling places it in the manner of the Norwich School — the East Anglian painters who took seventeenth-century Dutch landscape and relocated it to Norfolk. Windswept trees, low horizon, sailing wherry, cattle, and a bank of cloud doing the emotional work. Unsigned, as small works of this kind often are.

Acquired in France, though the subject is unmistakably English. A Norfolk river scene that spent some part of its life on the Continent before finding its way back across.

Set in a giltwood frame with a deep cove profile and a finely cast composition liner. The gilding has softened to a warm matte over time, and the corners show the small losses and knocks a frame earns across a century and a half of being moved from wall to wall.

Craquelure across the surface, most visible in the sky, entirely consistent with age and untouched. A painting that has aged rather than been restored into anonymity.
