Antique French Gilt Bronze Hound Wax Seal, Signed Meismer

A French desk seal in gilt bronze, cast as a long-eared hound sitting very upright with the patient, faintly reproachful expression of a dog who has been asked to wait. The modeling is loose and lively, with tool marks left in the coat and ears so the gilding catches the light unevenly. It's signed on the back, as signed "Meismer."

The base is engraved with an interlaced monogram, ready to press into warm wax. It works perfectly well for sealing letters, though it is equally happy standing on a desk keeping watch over the stationery.

The gilding has worn to a soft, warm gold, with a little more wear at the high points, the result of being picked up by the dog, which is the only sensible way to hold it.
