Antique Filigree Egg Shrine with Madonna and Green Cabochons

From the outside, it's an egg of openwork filigree, crowned with a small cross and set with green cabochons. Open it, and two hinged doors swing out to reveal a standing Madonna inside, framed in a lacy filigree niche. It's a devotional object and a small piece of theater at the same time.

The filigree is worked in sweeping leaf shapes and tight spirals, built up layer by layer so the light passes right through. A polished green cabochon sits at the top and another on the pedestal base, adding a jewel-like note against the warm metal. Inside, the Madonna stands with her hands joined in prayer, in the familiar pose of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Display it closed for the mystery or open for the reveal. It's equally at home on a mantel, a bookshelf, or anywhere a little quiet grace would be welcome.
