An exceptionally hard to find and beautifully preserved antique pietra dura box, Italian, dating to the 19th century. The body is fashioned from deep black stone and inlaid all over with intricate pietra dura (hard stone mosaic) work: delicate geometric tile patterns cover every surface in a mesmerizing, jewel-like repeat.

At the front, a cartouche-shaped medallion features a hand-inlaid white lily or tulip rendered in pale stone against a dark ground — a hallmark of the finest Italian pietra dura craftsmanship. The box is mounted throughout in richly chased gilded metal and bronze: scrolling foliate borders frame each panel, a decorative lock plate secures the hinged lid, and four small cast feet elevate the piece with elegance. The interior is fitted with the original deep crimson satin lining, supple and intact. The key does function.

A piece of extraordinary craftsmanship, equally at home displayed on a desk, a dressing table, or in a curio cabinet. It speaks quietly and powerfully — the kind of object that holds its history with grace.

Provenance: Period 19th century. The piece is made by Tahan, the celebrated Florence-based workshop that operated from their Via dei Servi atelier for only twelve years during the mid-19th century, becoming renowned across Europe for their exceptional pietra dura inlay and distinctive ormolu mounts.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. Minor wear consistent with age and use. All inlay intact. Fabric interior original and intact. Gilding warm and even.
Dimensions: 5.1 in × 6.7 in × 5.1 in (13 cm × 17 cm × 13 cm).
