A striking example of French academic draftsmanship, this mid-19th century charcoal drawing depicts a classical female figure — almost certainly Athena (Minerva), goddess of wisdom and war — rendered with confident, assured line work characteristic of the French atelier tradition. The figure stands in a dynamic contrapposto pose, draped in flowing classical robes and wearing a Corinthian helmet, with a long spear in hand and a small winged Nike figure hovering in the upper background. The drawing was executed on laid paper with the natural deckled edges of the sheet intentionally left exposed, lending the composition a wonderful sense of period authenticity.
The work bears a signature in the lower left, consistent with the hand of a trained French academic artist. A companion piece by the same hand has been attributed to the mid-1800s, placing this drawing squarely within the golden age of French classical training, when study from antique casts and mythological subjects was the foundation of every serious artist's education. This piece was acquired in Paris, adding to its provenance and appeal.
Presented in a warm honey-toned wood frame with a deep charcoal mat and conservation glass, the framing is both handsome and period-appropriate. The condition is consistent with age — the paper has a pleasing warm patina and there is some natural toning — which only adds to its authenticity and character as a 19th-century work on paper.
Measures approximately 16.5" x 23" (image). A wonderful addition to a library, study, or classically-inspired interior.
