Antique French Academic Charcoal Drawing — Mythological Chariot Procession, Signed, Mid-19th Century, Custom Framed

A sweeping and beautifully composed charcoal drawing by the same hand as our companion Athena piece, this mid-19th century work depicts a scene drawn directly from classical antiquity — a triumphant chariot procession rendered in the style of an ancient sculptural relief. At the center right, a semi-draped goddess reclines regally on a wheeled chariot pulled by a powerful horse, while two attendant figures — one a helmeted warrior with arm raised in triumph, the other a companion striding beside the wheel — animate the procession with a sense of movement and ceremony. A small winged Eros hovers near the animal in the lower left, a subtle signature of divine presence. The entire composition is rendered with confident, sculptural line work that evokes the great friezes of the ancient world: the Elgin Marbles, the Ara Pacis, the great triumphal reliefs of Rome.

The drawing bears the artist's signature in the lower left — the same hand responsible for the Athena figure drawing in our collection, a French academic artist whose companion piece has been attributed to the mid-1800s. Both works share the same atelier tradition: a rigorous study of antique sources, classical mythology, and the sculptural ideal that defined the great École des Beaux-Arts curriculum. This piece was acquired in Paris, lending it additional provenance and Continental character.

It has been thoughtfully custom framed with a deep charcoal mat that allows the warm tone of the aged paper to breathe, and enclosed under conservation glass to protect the work for generations. The deckled edges of the original sheet are kept deliberately visible within the mat opening, honoring the antique character of the paper rather than concealing it. The frame itself is a warm gilded wood moulding that suits the grandeur of the classical subject.
