Carved from volcanic lava stone in the tradition of Italian Grand Tour jewelry, this oval cameo brooch depicts a classical goddess — most likely Flora, Roman deity of flowers and spring — in frontal portrait, her flowing hair crowned with roses and foliage rendered in exceptional high relief. Lava stone cameos from the Mount Vesuvius region are recognized for their distinctive matte, biscuit-like surface in tones ranging from off-white to warm gray, and their subject matter typically included mythological gods, bacchantes, and classical portraits. Though more fragile than shell, lava allowed for an extraordinary depth of relief, and surviving examples from the 1800s are considered quite valuable. The stone is set in a gilt brass frame with a fine rope-twist border. Wearing lava jewelry in the Victorian era signaled that the owner was a well-traveled person of culture, connected to classical antiquity and the ancient world.
