Antique Opaline & Gilt Bronze Tazza

A shallow opaline bowl, milk-white and faint glow where the light finds the thin part of the wall, set into a gilt bronze mount that does most of the talking. A cast band of leaf tips and beading closes over the rim, two tall scrolled handles rise well above it in cast acanthus, and the whole stands on a waisted socle above a spreading foot of lotus lappets finished with a beaded edge.

Opaline is glass made opaque with bone ash, and the good examples are never quite opaque. Hold this one to a window and the thin edges give back a cool blue while the thicker wall turns faintly amber, which is the effect the trade looks for and the reason opaline has never really gone out of fashion. 8” x 5”
