Antique French Souvenir Casket – Verdun Monument Scene

This antique French casket features a glass-topped souvenir image of the Monument de la Victoire et des Soldats à Verdun, a powerful memorial commemorating the Battle of Verdun during World War I. The image is set within an ornate gilt metal box, raised on delicate cabriole-style feet, and finished with a working front clasp. Both decorative and historic, this piece captures the tradition of early 20th-century French travel souvenirs—objects meant to preserve memory through beauty.

I personally hand-sourced this piece in Paris, selecting it for its unique imagery, rich detail, and undeniable charm. These souvenir boxes were often cherished keepsakes, displayed on vanities or desks and used to hold treasured personal items such as jewelry, letters, or small mementos.

Condition:

Good antique condition with light age-appropriate wear. There is a small area of wear to the upper left portion of the image beneath the glass, consistent with age and time, and visible only upon close inspection. The structure is sound and the clasp functions properly. This minor wear adds to the authenticity and character of this historic piec
