Antique French Pastoral Landscape with Cow, Dated 1876
Antique French Pastoral Landscape with Cow, Dated 1876
A wonderfully charming 19th-century French pastoral landscape, dated 1876, depicting a quiet countryside scene with a grazing cow, distant figure, mature trees, and water visible beyond the fields. Painted on a small wooden panel, the artist has captured an extraordinary amount of detail within the intimate composition, from the tiny grazing animal to the soft clouds and distant horizon.
The painting retains its antique giltwood frame, with beautifully aged gilding and a decorative carved border. An original handwritten inscription remains visible on the reverse of the wooden panel and includes the date 1876, adding another lovely piece of history to the work.
The frame is in very good antique condition with the expected patina and age-related wear. The wooden painting panel is very slightly smaller than the opening of the frame, leaving a tiny gap visible from certain angles at the upper edge. It is essentially unnoticeable when the painting is displayed upright or hung, and I think it adds to the wonderfully collected character of the piece. 9” x 6”
