Antique French Mother-of-Pearl Calling Card Case — Diamond-Quilted Nacre, Engraved “MH” Monogram, 19th Century

A calling card case of genuine distinction, this 19th-century French example is entirely clad in diamond-cut tiles of mother-of-pearl, the nacre shifting through cream, soft mint, blush pink, and iridescent violet as the light moves across it. Every surface — front, back, and all four edges — is laid with the same meticulous quilted lattice, each tile individually cut at 45 degrees and fitted without a gap.

Set at the centre of the front face is a beautifully engraved silver cartouche: a shield-form panel framed by a beaded border and lush foliate scrollwork, the interior engraved with the script monogram “MH” in elegant interlocking letters. It is exactly the kind of personal flourish that made these cases such treasured gifts between friends, lovers, and family. The back face is plain nacre, the case opening along the top edge via a metal clasp, its slim profile designed to slip into a pocket, reticule, or glove.

Calling card cases were an essential accessory of 19th-century French and English social life — presented at formal calls, left with butlers, exchanged at introductions. All-nacre examples of this quality, with engraved silver cartouches, represent the upper tier of the form.

The case carries a couple of small repaired areas consistent with its age, visible on close inspection. Structurally sound, the clasp functions, and the overall visual impact remains excellent. A beautiful and personal piece of social history. Measures 4” x 3”.
